Furnished Tenancies Workshop

Date: Wednesday 14 April 2021

Time: 11.00am-12.00pm

Speakers:

  • Claire Donovan, Campaigns Manager, End Furniture Poverty
  • Peter Gill, Director of Housing, Citizen Housing

A virtual workshop focusing on Homes for Cathy commitment #7, ensuring properties offered to homeless people are ready to move into.

  • Hear from Claire Donovan, Campaigns Manager from End Furniture Poverty, the campaigning arm of charity and social business the FRC Group, about their ‘No Place Like Home‘ report which reveals that only 2% of social rented properties are let as furnished or partly furnished (i.e. floor coverings/curtains) in comparison to 29% of private rented properties. Claire will explore why there are so few furnished tenancies in the social housing sector, the barriers to creating them, and the impact of furniture provision, or the lack of it, on the lives of those moving from homelessness.
  • Peter Gill, Director of Housing at Homes for Cathy member Citizen Housing, will speak about their new ‘Fresh Start Standard‘, which challenges the narrative that low void costs equals good performance. Peter will discuss how the new standard – which will see 300 of Citizen’s existing homes re-let with furniture and white goods in the next financial year – makes good business sense.
